Lights Go Out During Penalty Shot In The OHL.....Should The Goal Count?
Matthew Strome of the Hamilton Bulldogs in the OHL got the opportunity for a penalty shot in a game against the Niagara Ice Dogs on Sunday night. Strome made a nice move on the goalie and scored on the penalty shot….only problem was that the lights started flickering just as Strome was putting the puck in the net. The refs called for a do-over in which Strome didn’t score. So here is my question….Should the first goal have counted?
The lights go out just before he makes his first move, leaving the goalie completely helpless and blind to the puck.
But it’s not completely black for more than a second. And the goalie still knew what he was doing. If we are being completely honest, I think this kid beats the goalie any way. Strome was the 2017 4th round selection of the Philadelphia Flyers and is having a career year. Through 40 games, the Mississauga native has 46 points (17g, 29a) and just simply had the goalie beat. Lets also keep in mind the lights when out for both players….not just the goalie.
I think a do-over was the right call and it sucks that he didn’t score again, but man….Strome got shafted here. He was beating that goalie regardless if the lights were on or off. Luckily this kid should be the NHL in the next few years and won’t have to worry about flickering arena lights.
